As a character that first debuted in Marvel Comics in 1968,Carol Susan Jane Danvers was previously less known than the male counterpart heroes. However, Marvel Studios’ first female-fronted superhero movie, Captain Marvel earned $455 million globally thereby making it one of the biggest blockbusters ever led by a woman.

The movie starring Brie Larson made an estimated $153 million in North America. It surpassed expectations of analysts who predicted that the film would make about $130 million in North America. From the sluggish start of the year, “Captain Marvel” is a boost to the movie industry.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Avengers movies, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, and Iron Man 3 have opened better. “She definitely pushed us higher, further, faster,” said Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff.

It’s breaking other records too. The movie is the sixth largest worldwide debut ever. Also, the only movie with a female lead which has opened better globally was ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. The movie earned 51% more than Wonder Woman’s opening weekend, so by default, it’s the biggest female-led superhero launch of all time.
