Sonam Kapoor Opens Up About Being Molested, And It Makes Us Feel That No Female Is Safe

We recently watched the promo for Rajeev Masand’s roundtable conversations, where various top actresses of the year, the ones who gave memorable performances, gathered around for some candid, some serious, confessions and revelations. Actresses like Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Vidya Balan, Alia Bhatt, and Radhika Apte have shared various aspects of their life, and one such aspect was sexual harassment. Sonam Kapoor, who inspired us all with her amazing portrayal of Neerja Bhanot in the biopic ‘Neerja’ had something to say, and it not only shocked us, but harrowed us to some extent that even someone as privileged and protected as a star kid would go through something as traumatising as this.

Sonam opened up about being molested at the age of mere 14, leaving everyone stunned. This was related to the fact that Vidya Balan portrayed a strong character in ‘Kahaani 2’, a movie which dealt with the delicate issue of child abuse, with such diligence.

In Sonam’s own words,

“I think everybody goes through some sort of sexual abuse in their childhood. I know I have been molested when I was younger and it was traumatising. I didn’t speak about it for two to three years. I remember the incident so clearly. I was going to watch a film starring Raveena Tandon and Akshay Kumar and I went with my friends to Gaiety Galaxy theatre. We were 13-14 year olds and we were sitting in the stalls. We used to hold each others’ shoulders while walking in. I was entering the last because I was the tallest obviously. So I was holding my friend Ekta’s shoulder. There was a man who came from behind and just held my breasts. Obviously I didn’t have breasts at that time, but I started shaking and shivering, I didn’t know what was going on. I started crying right there and I didn’t speak about it. I just sat there and finished watching the film. I felt like I had done something wrong, for the longest time. I know so many of my friends who have gone through something like that over and over again”.

Chilling, isn’t it? Makes you believe that none is invincible, and that demons can come from either side, or even can be inside the comfortable cocoons of one’s home.

We are proud that Sonam came out with this revelation, which takes a lot of courage.
