Jacqueline Fernandez, Manoj Bajpayee ,Mohit Raina & Zayn Marie starrer “Mrs. Serial Killer” fails miserably

With the entire world hitting the pause button simultaneously for obvious reasons, the entertainment industry has been hit the hardest. No new movies are releasing and with that OTT platforms are the ones having the last laugh. Releasing original content on the small screen, Netflix has successfully come up with the movies that the audiences can enjoy within the confines of their homes. Amongst the newly released movies is Shirish Kunder’s ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’ starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Manoj Bajpayee, Mohit Raina and debutante Zayn Marie in lead roles.

While a lot was expected from the psychological thriller, ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’ is a disappointment right from the word go. A botched up storyline, tiresome performances and a dragged-beyond-words screenplay, this Netflix original does not solve the purpose it was meant for – entertainment! Set in the picturesque heartland of Uttarakhand, the film does boast of some lovely shots of the locales but apart from that it has nothing much to offer.

Under suspicion for gruesomely killing off unmarried pregnant girls and keeping their fetuses as trophies, a noted gynecologist Mrityunjoy Mukherjee is taken into custody. His devoted wife Sona runs from pillar to post to prove his innocence; but no lawyer is willing to take up their case, until an ailing defence lawyer Rastogi takes it upon himself to go all out to save the doctor, who he is indebted to for life. Investigating Officer Imran, who also happens to be ex-lover of Sona, makes sure the doctor is given the noose. But when all doors close in on the couple, Mrs. Mukherjee decides to help her husband all by herself.

She plans to start a series of copycat killings to prove that the killer is still on the loose, thus kidnapping her unmarried pregnant Taekwondo instructor neighbour girl Anushka to begin with. But all hell starts to break loose when her gynec husband is granted bail and the twosome decides to come out of the ‘mess’ stronger together. But do they?

Shirish Kunder, who gave us the forgettable ‘Joker’ and the irrelevant ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ in the past, strikes again with ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’, which does not make heads and tails of the storyline, if there is any! His digital film is laugh worthy and does not present a coherent idea in the events that follow in the movie. The editing lacks continuity and the scenes are shabbily written. Even the background score and music, which Kunder towards the end mentions as “original”, is only a haunting version of SRK-starrer ‘Asoka’s’ Roshni se bhare bhare. The film is ridden with so many negatives that it makes watching the 1-hour-45-minute-long murder mystery a very tough task! It is far from captivating, which is expected from a murder mystery.

When the trailer of ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’ dropped, it promised intrigue in an edgy story. However, with a very predictable climax and very average performances (barring Bajpayee, who is the saving grace of the film), the mystery thriller turns out to be a comedy, we sadly did not ask for!
