Jaya Bachchan Reacts To India Being The Most Dangerous Country For Women

India’s bubble that preaches that women are akin to Goddesses has been broken. As per a Thomson Reuters’ yearly survey India has been labelled as the most dangerous country for women; leaving war ridden countries like Afghanistan and Syria behind. This statement of debate has finally reached the Rajya Sabha as veteran actress and Samajwadi Party Member Jaya Bachchan has reacted to it.

While addressing Reuters’ survey, Jaya Bachchan stated that it is ‘very shameful’. She further added, “I want to ask: Can you tell us detail about the report on Kathua incident, will government give white paper in the Parliament on the status of crime against women?”

This statement sparked a debate between the veteran actress and Minister of State for Ministry of Women and Child Development Virendra Kumar. Kumar swiftly replied to Jaya’s question by presenting figures from 2015-16 about rape cases in other countries.

Virendra Kumar’s move caused a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha as Jaya Bachchan lashed out by questioning if the Indian Government is doing anything for the safety of women in the country.

In the time of recent atrocities done on the women kind like the Kathua rape case where an 8-year old girl was held captive in a temple where she was brutally gang-raped and then murdered; or like the Chennai rape case where an entire community of helpers gang-raped a 11-year old for months.

Months later still no action has been taken against the suspects of both the rape cases.

Jaya Bachchan’s awareness and retort shows that this report will not be swept under the rug like many others before.

At least one of the Bachchans has raised a voice against rapes in India.

Few months back Bollywood’s mega star Amitabh Bachchan was trolled for not condemning the Kathua rape case. This not only earned Bachchan the ire of his fans but also of fellow celebrities likeactor Prakash Raj and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt. Prakash Raj went a step further and labelled Amitabh Bachchan as a coward.

Ironically, Amitabh Bachchan is the ambassador for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”.
