PLOT

A successful writer Abhimanyu Roy, stuck with writers block, returns to his roots in Kolkata to write an old-fashioned love story. As Abhi says ''You know when a song comes on and you just have to dance? Bindu was that song. That silly infectious joyful tune you couldn't get out of your head - even if you wanted to."

The trailer of Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra-starrer ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ was dropped on us like a shower of sweets, when the world was being taken over by the storm named ‘Baahubali’. Slow, steady, and sweet, ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ started garnering an audience of its own that was a fan of such sweet romantic comedies. So, what is it that this movie offers which is different from other slice of life rom-coms. We will tell you. Read on.

The movie starts with Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann), an author of horror and sex filled novels, who is currently suffering from a bad case of writer’s block. He is introduced to a girl for the prospect of arrange marriage, and that is where we come to know that he has not written a book for the past three years. One particularly hilarious sequence is the one where the girl’s father reads out a raunchy part of his book. Classy!

Story moves on, and still there is no clue of Bindu(Parineeti), the muse of our writer sahib. And then, the inevitable happens. Nope, not at all what you are thinking. A bomb drops on Abhimanyu when his parents, played to perfection by Aparajita Auddy and Rajatava Dutta, announce that they are getting divorced. Roy rushes to his native place, and it is then, while ‘Bubla’, as his pet name goes, is going through the old storage room, he finds the tapes that he had made. And BAM! We are introduced to the psunami that has captured the heart and mind of Abhimanyu, since childhood, named Bindu.

As we scour the tapes with Abhimanyu and delve in and out of memories, a beautiful love story starts developing. Not the one which is cheesily romantic and dripping of maple syrup, but the one that comes like a punch of Hajmola, the first bite of the bread pakoda, and the first sip of hot tea while it’s dripping wet with rains outside.

‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ is not a very novel concept and dips down in between parts and sequences, but the performances, especially that of Ayushmann and Parineeti, binds it and keeps the flow tightened, for which the credit should also be given to director Akshay Roy, who has captured the vein of Calcutta. The supporting cast too does its job fabulously. The casting director has really brought on actors who have brought life to the characters, no matter what the screen time.

In the end, we would say just one thing. Don’t expect anything; happy endings, romance, nothing. Just go and sit through this story of life which develops in the lanes of Calcutta, with love making its presence felt like a character. You will come out of the theater smiling, for sure.

We at Eventznu give ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’ 3/5. Experience, life, love, and everything in between, as Calcutta, Abhi, and Bindu enter your lives and leave you strangely fulfilled, your heart a little lighter, your eyes a little moist.
